Can Wonder Wandies do the Double? |
The last few weeks have seen Murrayfield Wanderers build momentum with a hard fought win against Hill Jills away and a dazzling performance against Dundee which saw them score 164-0. These 2 performences resulted in Wanderers winning the Scottish Premier League as others failed to capitalise their opportunities.
Murrayfield Wanderers 19 Royal High Cougars 8
Sunday saw the clash of 2 old rivals in the semi final of the Challenge cup to gain passage to the coveted final next week. The match was played at Peffermill as was Murrayfield not available due to the Magic Weekend. Wandies were ready for battle even without Lana 'Bad' Blyth who managed to injure herself the week before whilst scoring a try. The match started with Royal High's no. 10 Tanya Griffiths putting in a number of probing kicks which tested the Wandies back 3 and saw RHC with the first pressure on the Wandies 5m line. An unfortunate knock on at the base of a ruck resulted in RHC failling to capitalise on the ground they had made. Wandies managed to clear their lines with a kick from Lisa 'Shorty' Martin. From here Wandies slowly but surely kept possesion and after a break from the base of a ruck on the half way, Wandies scrum half Gilly grubbered through which was chased and collected by Katy 'green Machine' Green. Frantic RHC defence reorganised and from a ruck on the 5m line Rhona Shepherd dived over a bundle of players to claim the first try. Gilly slotted the conversion 7-0.
RHC suffered a number of injuries which hampered their efforts in retaining possesion but just when Wandies looked to be on top, a penalty in our 22 gave RHC the chance to pull back some points. Cougars Louise Dalgleish kicked the penalty to make it 7-3.
In the 2nd half Wandies started well, with some determined ball carrying from Moff, Tess and Captain Ruthie who lead the charge to show this game was far from over. Wandies no 10 Shep came off injured with a calf strain to which she was met with 'aye ok, but can you go back on? After commenting she would return to the field but not run with the ball, she proceeded to run in a try from our own 22 with a number of players 'hinging aff her'. Well done shep! Gilly scored a neat conversion from the side of the park, score 14-3.
RHC pulled back a score to make it 14-8 with the game still all to play for. Moff came off injured greetin saying that she had broke her hand. She was given the same reply that was given to shep 'aye ok, but can you go back on?' Moff duly skipped back on and played her part as did all the Wandies forwards in supplying the backs a platform. Rhona scored a 3 rd try which took the final score to 19-8.
A well over due Wandies team night out ensued. Fun was had by all and for the record, the coach has retired from karioke duties. Officially. Next weekend sees the final to be bashed out between Wanderers and HillJills. If the last game was anything to go by, it will be hard , emotional and a fight to the end. These are the games we wait all season for...........................
May the best team win!

Pirates take on Italy- 28 Feb - OFF |
Unfortunately the language discussions were beyond everybody, and the italisns ended up double booked. So our game against them is OFF.
Apologies to all.
A little reminder about this coming Saturdays game against an over 35's Italian touring side from Florence. We are playing them at Inverleith kicking off at 11am (meet at 10am). From there the club is offering a corporate lunch for only £10 per head. Gavin's infamous 3 course carvery (it is very good, honest). Lots of socialising and a couple of international matches to watch on the big screen, not to mention a warm atmosphere and cheap drink (can't promise Smudger will smile though). And that's after you putting your bodies on the line for your club and country. What a way to forget any aches and pains from the match.
Let Davey Dewar know ASAP about your availability for both the game and the lunch please.

New Scotland Cap - Congratulations |
Congratulations to Katy Green for winning her first Scotland Cap in the Women's 6 Nations defeat to France last weekend. She joined fellow Wanderers in the team: Beth Dickens, Ellen Beattie, Ruth Slaven, Sarah Gill, Laura Steven & Lucy Millard, congratulations Katy!
Congratulations also to the following players who competed for the Scottish Development Side v France A - Sarah Quick, Michelle Ovens, Jennifer Miller, Heather Law. This side is coached by MWFC Ladies Coach Jules Murciano.
Sadly the Scottish Academy Squads match v British Colleges was cancelled due to the Scottish weather so there disappointment for the following players: Wenche Tobaisson, Shona Peacock, Lesley Graham & Sarah Dunnett and their coach MWFC Player, Claire Cruikshank. It is hoped that this game will get rescheduled to allow the girls to get some representative rugby.
Well done to all players, it's a testament to the hard work put in that so many are playing representative rugby.

Next Youth Cup Match |
Our U18s start the defence of their SWRU U18 Trophy on Sunday 8th February with a match v Biggar. This is actually the 2nd/Quarter Finals, the girls 1st round opposition conceding on them.
The team are looking to regain the trophy after winning the Inagural Trophy on the main picth at Murrayfield last season. Several members of last years winning team have moved out of U18 rugby, but with some key new players joining us and the girls who have moved up from U15 level the team still looks strong.
Match Details:
Sunday 8th Feb
930am Kick off

U15s Away in Youth Cup |
Our U15s, like the U18s, 1st round match resulted in a walkover. So they head to Carrick on Sunday 1st February to start their Youth Cup Campaign in the 2nd round/Quarter Final stage hoping to go one better than last year when they finished as runners up to a very strong Gala side.
The U15s team has great numbers this season, mainly thanks to the great schools work being done. The team has also retained many of last years successful squad and has acquired several promising girls who have moved up from p7 rugby.
Match Details:
Sunday 1st Feb
2pm Kick off
