Bill McLaren tribute |
Please note that the Club will be open on Thursday evening. 68 Members of a Welsh Male Voice Choir who are performing at the Tribute will be drinking in the Club after the Tribute and the have agree to sing for us. If you plan to go to the Tribute please have a drink in the Club afterwards. It should be a good evening. Food will be available.
Please also note that club training is cancelled for that evening, in order to ensure that our grunts and groans do not intrude on the moment's silence in the stadium.
The SRU announcement re the evening is:
Murrayfield Stadium is playing host to a star studded tribute evening for Bill McLaren whose family, together with Scottish Rugby, extend a warm invitation to everyone involved in the game and in particular to valued members of the Scottish rugby community, such as you, who put so much into the game that Bill loved.
The gates will be open from 5pm, on Thursday 11 March, two nights before the Calcutta Cup match against England. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to arrive early and take their seats as the evening will start at 6.30pm sharp.
Free commemorative programmes will be available. The evening tribute, at Bill's "second home" will see the likes of Scotland's cap centurion Chris Paterson, Welsh wizard wing Gerald Davies, and other rugby greats and well-wishers attending from all over the world to celebrate and give thanks for the Hawick legend's genius.
The evening will see a large stage erected on the running track in front of the West Stand, with big screens showing pictures and specially-created match footage accompanied by some of Bill's most evocative commentary.
There will also be musical accompaniment from a Welsh male voice choir and Scottish Pipe Bands.
BBC presenter Dougie Donnelly will be the host for the evening, and he will also welcome tributes from former British and Irish Lions captains Gavin Hastings (Scotland) and Bill Beaumont (England) amongst others.
We very much hope that you can join us on Thursday and encourage you to forward this invitation to as many rugby enthusiasts as possible, to ensure they don't miss this wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the "Voice of Rugby".

Situations Vacant, ie we want YOU to volunteer! |
We are starting to look towards who is going to do what next season. As ever, we are looking to spread the load; so if you can do ANY task then please get in touch, eg web updates, kit stock, International tickets, etc.
However, we are looking specifically for the following positions to be filled:
Fixtures secretary (Men) - liaises with club and opposition and confirms match locations and KO times.
Referees secretary (Men) - liaises with SRU and confirms referees for all senior male inc U18 home fixtures.
Treasurer (Youth) - controls the accounts for the Youth section, taking subs and funds raised and re-imbursiong expenses.
Child Protection Officer (Youth) - ensures that all coaches have clearance from Disclosure Scotland, and is the focus for any parental/young person concern.
These jobs are all very important to us, but they really do not take up too much time. So please offer to help. For the Secretary posts, please contact Ewan Gillies; for the Youth posts, please contact one of the coaches.

Internationals at the club - in particular how to get access for Scotlnd v England |
The clubhouse is open and welcomes all members to watch all the Home Internationals:
- Sat 27 Feb Italy (H)
- Sat 13 March England (H)
- Sat 20 March Ireland (A), 3 matches on the one day!!
However, for the England game we know that we will be exceptionally busy. Therefore we will have to restict access. (The new licensing laws in Scotland provide a strict limit in numbers, and we know that the Licensing Officers have been checking up on clubs).
In order to get access all members will have to have a ticket. These are available (free, of course!) from Ron Shuttleworth (ronshuttleworth@btinternet.com or via phone as per the numbers in our "Officials" section). Please apply before Friday 5 March.
In the unlikely event of them not being taken up, then they will be available on a first-come-first served basis on the door, but they will be restricted to members and 1 guest upto our permitted total number.
These conditions apply to pre and after the match.

Lofty bows out. |
The club had really sad news this week: Alistair (Lofty) McLean died. He had a series of strokes and unfortunately didn't recover.
Lofty played for Kenmore and Murrayfield before hanging up his boots to concentrate on helping run the Bar,following a distinguished career in moving the beer as a Brewers drayman and testing the lager to ensure the quality was tiptop. His playing career was spent alongside his namesake Alistair Gordon at Lock or at No8 keeping things together.
Our greatest sympathies go to his family.
Lofty's funeral will be held at 11 AM at Mortonhall Crematorium on Wednesday 10th February; thereafter a celebration of his life will be held at the MWFC Clubhouse.
Hopefully the club will be well represented.
Another piece of bad news is that Valerie Martin has also died. Her husband - Dennis, who served on Edinburgh Wanderers committee for years - is in hospital. Valerie's funeral is on Wednesday 10th February at Warriston (Lorimer).
A bad week all round!
